Among hills, mountains, and natural parks, Tuscany offers a series of delightful landscapes where you can enjoy trekking at all levels, with routes suitable for families and beginners, as well as more experienced hikers.

1. Val d'Elsa River Park

Perfect for families and beginners, the Val d'Elsa River Park offers a simple and accessible route of about 6 km. The path follows the course of the Elsa river through waterfalls and natural pools, with many ideal spots to stop and cool off from the heat. The average duration of the excursion is a couple of hours, with limited elevation changes that make the route suitable for everyone.

2. Via Romea Sanese

For those looking for a slightly more challenging trekking itinerary in Tuscany, the Via Romea Sanese, which stretches from Florence to Siena, is the right choice. This potentially multi-day itinerary, which extends for about 80 km, will take you through medieval villages and breathtaking landscapes. The route can be divided into stages of 20-25 km per day, with a total duration of 4 days, but of course, nothing prevents you from only covering a part of it.

3. Alta Versilia Trail

Behind Forte dei Marmi, the Alta Versilia Trail offers a loop route through the Apuan Alps, with various itineraries and the possibility of exploring some charming villages. The elevation changes are significant, so this trek is recommended for those who already have good physical preparation.

4. Abetone Ring

The Abetone ring, in the province of Pistoia, is a challenging route, stretching for about 12 km with an elevation gain of almost 800 m, taking an average of about 5 hours to complete. However, it is extremely rewarding because, starting from Le Regine and reaching Lake Nero, then returning, you venture through a series of breathtaking panoramas that will delight high-mountain lovers.

5. Via Francigena

The Tuscan section of the very long Via Francigena [https://www.regione.toscana.it/via-francigena] offers many satisfactions, also thanks to the heterogeneous settings through which it takes trekking enthusiasts. 380 km that can be tackled in single sections or as stages of a longer journey.

Trekking in Tuscany: What to bring with you

Once you've chosen your trekking itinerary in Tuscany, it's time to decide what to bring with you.

The necessary equipment depends on the type of route you have chosen: for a multi-day trek, it will obviously be advisable to bring a good tent, various changes of clothes, and a series of useful accessories for spending a lot of time outdoors.

Come see our Backpacks!

If, on the other hand, you have opted for a day excursion, the "essentials" will suffice, meaning those must-haves like good trekking shoes, an ergonomic and spacious backpack, appropriate clothing, a water bottle, some snacks, and a small first-aid kit to handle any eventuality.

The season also makes a difference, because just as Tuscany can be scorching in summer, in winter, especially if you go to higher altitudes, temperatures can get quite rigid, in which case it will be necessary to equip yourself "in layers" to be able to cover up as needed, in addition to any equipment such as poles and snowshoes for walking on snow.

You can find everything you need for your excursions in our Store, in the various sections dedicated to mountains, travel, and winter walks.

Happy trekking!
